EPDM Seals: Properties and Advantages of the Elastomer Material

EPDM, also known as ethylene propylene diene rubber, is a versatile elastomer material widely used in sealing applications. Due to its excellent resistance to weathering, UV radiation, ozone, and extreme temperatures ranging from -40 °C to +150 °C — special grades up to around 180 °C (hot water and steam up to approx. 200 °C) — EPDM is ideally suited for use in demanding environments. EPDM seals are particularly durable and resistant to chemical substances, acids, alkalis, and steam, making them a perfect choice for many industrial and construction-related applications.

Common applications for EPDM seals include window seals, door seals, façade seals, and seals in the automotive industry.

EPDM O-rings tolerate hot water but are not compatible with mineral oils or animal fats (such as milk). However, they are resistant to silicone oils and greases. EPDM O-rings are often used in the food industry with FDA compliance and are considered physiologically safe when approved accordingly. They are also available with certifications such as (EC) 1935/2004 and USP Class VI.

Another key advantage of EPDM is its flexibility, even in cold temperatures, which makes it especially valuable for outdoor use. However, the material is not resistant to mineral oils and hydrocarbons, which should be taken into account when selecting materials.

Thanks to its properties, EPDM is among the most popular materials for seals in the construction and automotive sectors. Choose EPDM when you need a long-lasting, weather- and chemical-resistant sealing solution.
